An ultrasonic flow detector (or ultrasonic flow meter) is a device used to measure the flow rate of liquids or gases within a pipe using ultrasonic sound waves. It is widely used in industries like water treatment, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and HVAC systems because it is non-intrusive and does not require cutting into the pipe.
How It Works:

Ultrasound Principles: The detector uses ultrasonic sound waves to calculate flow rate. There are two common methods:
- Transit-Time Method: Measures the time it takes for an ultrasonic signal to travel between two transducers, upstream and downstream. The difference in transit times is used to calculate the flow rate.
- Doppler Method: Measures the frequency shift of ultrasonic waves as they reflect off particles or bubbles in the fluid. This frequency shift correlates to the flow velocity.

- Typically, the transducers are mounted outside the pipe (clamp-on type) or inserted into the flow line (insertion type).
- This allows measurement without disrupting the flow or requiring pipe modifications.

- Limited Doppler Use Cases: Requires a minimum level of particles or bubbles in the fluid for the Doppler method.
